‘Pataphysics, a term coined by French writer Alfred Jarry (1873 – 1907), is a philosophy dedicated to studying what lies beyond the realm of metaphysics. It is a parody of the theory and methods of modern science and is often expressed in nonsensical language. A practitioner of ‘pataphysics is a ‘pataphysician or a ‘pataphysicist…

Read this and weep! FedEx refuses to ship arty “novelty” items since they look “suspiciously like bomb making material” - note that bomb-making material, according to the cans, could be stuff like “infinite impropability” rocket fuel or just air: cans with nitrogen (78,084% pure - like the atmosphere) or neon (0,0018% pure) - suspicious, oh but how! What’s the paranoia coming to? Reminds me a little bit of the Steven Kurtz case - only silly!

Another totally amazing weblabel, Leep - short for Leeuroparisien I guess. Anyway go check it out, it’s pwetty mad! I especially fell for Tracy Lee Summers work. Noisy musique concrete stuff, but with a sense of melody and harmonies that you don’t encounter so often.

Strangely inspiring to what I do right now - I’m currently trying to finish writing my PhD - I tripped over The Books and their take on Lewis Carrol’s Jabberwocky on their latest album. Here’s the danish translation of Jabberwocky (by Arne Herløv Pedersen, also a notable translator of quality science fiction, from 1986):
I glummert lys den slyge spæg
stod gomrende og glim.
I børkens dyb stod mamren fjæg
og bungrede i skim.
“Vogt dig for Kloppervok, min søn,
pas på dens tand og klo!
Hold dig fra fuglen Djubberløn
og fra den spuge flog!”
Han tog sit vorpne sværd i hånd
og søgte fjenden trum,
Ved tomtetræets smækre vånd
han ventede så stum.
Som uffig han i tanker stod,
den kurpe Kloppervok
med flammeøjne ret imod
ham kom og guste spok.
Men hug på hug! Og sværdfet slog
så vorpent mod dens hals!
Dér lå den død; dens hoved tog
han med sig i gefals.
“Og, har du fældet Kloppervok?
Min søs, du est en knog!
Det er en glamrig dag, og nok
en spurkel værd, mintro!”

Just for starters, check the report on “Stackers”, the new computer game designed by Rockstar Games. “Stackers” is designed to have NO influence on kids’ behavior AT ALL. That’s good. Then go here. Even more silly stuff.

Flickr Tag Browser is a nifty way to browse through Flickr’s tag-space. Great design, and it’s fast too. Flickeur (pronounced like Voyeur) is another weird photo-thing that takes random pics from Flickr and seemingly assembles them in a narrative montage. I’ve seen a few russian arthouse flicks that look exactly like this. From dataisnature.com:
Flickeur (pronounced like Voyeur) randomly retrieves images from Flickr.com and creates an infinite film with a style that can vary between stream-of-consciousness, documentary or video clip. All the blends, motions, zooms or timeleaps are completely random. Flickeur works like a looped magnetic tape where incoming images will merge with older materials and be influenced by the older recordings’ magnetic memory. The virtual tape will also play and record forward and backward to create another layer of randomness. This principle will create its own sometimes very suggestive or scary story. It might take a few minutes until the tape has accumulated enough material to not show any empty screens anymore.’
