Our new album is reviewed in the May issue of WIRE. An excerpt:
“Immaculately designed, with a modernist cool that still has room for the fallibly human, putting on Avellaneda is the sonic equivalent of the room suddenly acquiring a classic Arne Jacobsen chair; perhaps the model 1307 that broke technical ground by bending plywood into a smooth curve…”
Finally, after FOUR YEARS my new album with Skyphone is out on Rune Grammofon on February 25. Rune writes:
Skyphone belong to a new generation of Danish musicians that also include bands like Under Byen and Efterklang. Musically it´s possible to place them somewhere between Efterklang, Sigur Ros and Swedish group Tape. In the Rune Grammofon catalogue Skyphone is probably closest in spirit and musical ideology to Svalastog and the more melodic sides of Alog. With ”Avellaneda” they have further developed the ideas of their acclaimed ”Fabula” debut into a seamless blend of acoustic and electronic elements, rich in detail and sonic refinement, with the occasional touch of Scandinavian folk music providing a strong melodic base”
Another totally amazing weblabel, Leep - short for Leeuroparisien I guess. Anyway go check it out, it’s pwetty mad! I especially fell for Tracy Lee Summers work. Noisy musique concrete stuff, but with a sense of melody and harmonies that you don’t encounter so often.
Strangely inspiring to what I do right now - I’m currently trying to finish writing my PhD - I tripped over The Books and their take on Lewis Carrol’s Jabberwocky on their latest album. Here’s the danish translation of Jabberwocky (by Arne Herløv Pedersen, also a notable translator of quality science fiction, from 1986):
I glummert lys den slyge spæg
stod gomrende og glim.
I børkens dyb stod mamren fjæg
og bungrede i skim.
“Vogt dig for Kloppervok, min søn,
pas på dens tand og klo!
Hold dig fra fuglen Djubberløn
og fra den spuge flog!”
Han tog sit vorpne sværd i hånd
og søgte fjenden trum,
Ved tomtetræets smækre vånd
han ventede så stum.
Som uffig han i tanker stod,
den kurpe Kloppervok
med flammeøjne ret imod
ham kom og guste spok.
Men hug på hug! Og sværdfet slog
så vorpent mod dens hals!
Dér lå den død; dens hoved tog
han med sig i gefals.
“Og, har du fældet Kloppervok?
Min søs, du est en knog!
Det er en glamrig dag, og nok
en spurkel værd, mintro!”
First entry since March - gee, I must be busy!?!? Well, this is just to say that Earth Money Productions is a great web label. The Internet Archive truly contains many a gem.
I’ve said it for a while now, but now it’s an official rumor - the WiFi equipped iPod is coming. At least the chip set to make it work. Of course having WiFi connected will probably drain the batteries in less than it takes to say itunesmusicstoreisgettingannoyingnowthatyoufindalotofsmalllabelsdoingtheirown…such as thisone(check the Hapna releases - they’re great!), thisone or even thisone.
Personalized music radio in decent quality at last.fm or pandora.com. Handy for checking out new stuff. I was slighly sceptical to begin with, but it actually works very well and has a comprehensive library of music.
I really, really like listening to music. I also really, really like downloading music I find on the web. There’s something immensely satifying in snatching other peoples heartfelt creative outputs, putting together playlists to impress people with your latest, “very interesting imported EP’s from obscure labels” - never tell the audience you found ot on the web - it just totally undermines your credibility as a DJ - or an academic for that matter…yes? That said, there’s a lot of crap out there, both in terms of music and academically, but let’s stick to music. Lots and lots of less than interesting bedroom-sessions etc. Yet once in a while you trip on something amazing (and even better: actually free as in actually free beer!!) such as Jason Corders Microcosm LP on the Thinner weblabel. I’m not much into the minimal tech style, but even if it’s strictly 4×4 housey stuff, he actually manages to come up with very interesting scapes and melodies to keep up the attraction. Go grab!
